IMPORTANT:
This is an OIL PRESSURE RELIEF (regulating) valve for John Deere PowerTech 3029, 4045, and 6068 engines — it limits maximum oil pressure to protect bearings and seals. Do NOT confuse with fuel pressure relief valves or suction control valves — those are fuel system components. RE505501 fits earlier-generation PowerTech engines (1997-2003 era) used in 5200/5300/5400/6200/6300/6400-series tractors and 310E/310SE backhoes. For later PowerTech engines (2001-2007 era in 6x20/7x20 tractors), see RE516335 — the two are NOT interchangeable.
Symptoms of a failing oil pressure relief: pressure too high at cold start (stuck closed) or too low at hot idle (stuck open/worn spring), fluctuating gauge readings, and oil leaks around the valve. When replacing, inspect the bore for scoring and clean debris from the seat. Replace the O-ring. Low oil pressure can also indicate a worn oil pump, clogged pickup screen, or excessive bearing clearances — diagnose the root cause before replacing.
⚠️ Confirm engine generation — RE505501 vs RE516335 are NOT interchangeable.
