IMPORTANT:
This is a VALVE ROTATOR — it is NOT a valve. A valve rotator is a valve train component that sits between the valve spring retainer and the spring. It rotates the valve slightly (a few degrees) with each opening cycle, which distributes heat and wear evenly across the valve face and seat. This prevents hot spots, localized carbon buildup, and uneven seat wear that would cause premature valve failure and compression loss. Ordering a valve when you need a rotator (or vice versa) is the #1 mistake with this part.
Fits John Deere 500 Series engines (6.8L and 7.6L variants) in 4050/4055/4250/4255/4450/4455/4650/4850 tractors (1983-1992 production). Valve rotators typically fail by seizing — the rotator stops turning and the valve begins to wear unevenly. Symptoms of a failed rotator: localized carbon track on the valve face, a hot spot or burn mark on one side of the valve, and premature valve failure on one cylinder while others are fine. When doing a valve job on these engines, always inspect all rotators. If any rotator is stiff or seized, replace it — a failed rotator will quickly destroy a new valve. Rotators are installed with the spring side facing the spring and the retainer side facing the valve stem lock grooves.
⚠️ This is a ROTATOR, not a valve. Replace any rotator that does not spin freely.
