WHY THE GEAR REDUCTION UNIT REPLACES THE DIRECT DRIVE:
• Higher output — 1.4 kW against the original 1.3 kW direct drive
• Faster cranking on the same battery and cables
• Lower current draw, which matters on a fifty year old wiring loom
• Smaller and lighter, with improved hot and cold starting

FITMENT NOTES:
• LATER-MODEL GEAR REDUCTION UNIT — EXPECT IT TO LOOK DIFFERENT FROM YOUR ORIGINAL. The YM1700 and YM2000 left the factory with a physically larger Hitachi 1.3 kW direct drive starter. This offset gear reduction design supersedes it and is the correct replacement
• Mounting dimensions and electrical connections match the original, so it bolts straight in with no modification. Two-bolt mount on the drive end housing, 13.5mm unthreaded ears on 120mm centres, 95mm registry diameter
• 12 VOLT, clockwise rotation, 15-tooth pinion, 44.1mm gear outside diameter — the tooth count and gear diameter are unchanged from the original unit
• Hitachi built this starter as both S114-146 and S114-145. Both numbers are covered
• The Yanmar 2TR17 and 2TR20 are the two-cylinder diesels fitted to the YM1700 and YM2000 respectively. Identify by engine code as well as tractor model
• Several Yanmar part numbers cover this starter position across the production run — match the number stamped on your original unit where possible
• NOTE ON GREY MARKET TRACTORS — the YM1700 and YM2000 were sold new in Japan and imported to North America second hand. Serial numbers and specification can vary between batches, so confirm the starter number on the machine rather than working from the model name alone
