IMPORTANT:
Water temperature sensor for Perkins 400 Series small diesel engines (402D/403D/404D, 2004-2020). Uses 2-pin M14x1.5 thread. Do NOT confuse with W85720580 (also a 400 Series water temp sensor with the same thread and connector) — these sensors have different NTC resistance curves for different engine serial number ranges and ECU calibrations. They physically interchange but give incorrect temperature readings, causing fueling errors without setting a diagnostic fault code.
The Perkins 400 Series includes 2-cylinder (402D), 3-cylinder (403D), and 4-cylinder (404D/404D-22) variants found in Cat mini excavators, compact equipment, generator sets, and various OEM industrial applications. Failure symptoms: inaccurate temperature gauge, cooling fan running constantly or not at all, poor cold-start performance, and rough running. On these small engines (0.5L to 1.5L displacement), temperature-based fueling errors have a larger impact than on bigger engines. Always verify by Perkins engine serial number, not just equipment model.
