IMPORTANT:
180°F thermostat element (no housing) for Cat 3046 4.5L engines. Fits Cat 416C/426C/436C backhoes (1990-2001). The #1 ordering mistake: the Cat 3046 is the EARLIER engine — if your machine is 2001+ with a 3054C or C4.4, you need a different thermostat. The 3046 was replaced by the 3054 family in later production.
Cross-reference: Cat 3046 is unique to Cat — it does NOT have a direct Perkins equivalent like the later 3054 series.
Failure symptoms: overcooling (stuck open), overheating under load (stuck closed), temperature gauge reading erratically. On the 3046, a failing thermostat often presents as gradual overcooling before eventually sticking closed and causing overheating.
