This upper main bearing is designed for Mercury and Mariner 3-cylinder 2.955 bore Looper outboard motors in the 45 through 60 HP range from 1991 through 1997. The Mercury Looper design refers to the loop-charged 2-stroke engine configuration that provided improved fuel delivery compared to earlier deflector piston designs. Compatible with the 50 HP and 60 HP Looper models, the Jet 45 HP jet drive variant, and the Sea Pro 55 HP 13-spline commercial fishing model. The upper main bearing supports the crankshaft at the top of the powerhead and must handle the radial loads from crankshaft rotation during outboard engine operation. A worn upper main bearing causes increased engine noise, crankshaft misalignment, power loss, and can lead to serious powerhead damage if not replaced during service. These 3-cylinder Looper models were popular mid-range outboards for bass fishing, pontoon boats, and general recreational boating applications throughout the 1990s.
