CHECK YOUR SERIES NUMBER FIRST — THIS IS THE 24 VOLT STARTER:
Komatsu built the D20 and D21 across several series, and the electrical system changed between them. This starter is 24 VOLT and fits the DASH 6 machines, the ones with the 4D95S engine. The later dash 7 machines use the 4D94E engine and the dash 8 machines use the 4D94LE-2, and both of those are 12 VOLT systems taking a 2.3 kW starter. A D21A-6 and a D21A-7 carry almost the same name on the blade and completely different electrics. Read the series number stamped after the model name on your machine plate before ordering, because the model name on its own will not tell you which starter you need

TOOTH COUNT, PINION AND MOUNTING — MEASURE BEFORE ORDERING:
This is the 9 TOOTH clockwise rotation starter. The pinion outside diameter is 35.6 mm, or 1.402 inches. It mounts on two unthreaded holes of 12.9 mm inside diameter, and the complete unit weighs 19.02 lb, or 8.65 kg. Check the tooth count and the pinion diameter on your original before ordering

OSGR OFFSET GEAR REDUCTION — HIGH TORQUE FOR COLD STARTING:
This is an offset gear reduction starter. The reduction gearset multiplies torque, so the unit cranks harder than a direct drive starter of the same physical size and draws less current doing it. That matters most on a cold morning, on aged wiring, or on batteries that are past their best

• In the Komatsu suffixes the A is the standard dozer, the P is the wide track low ground pressure machine, the PL is the extra wide track, the S is the crawler loader with a bucket and the Q is the quick coupler variant. All of them take the same starter within the dash 6 series

• Parts data most often quotes this starter against 1991 to 1994
• Series number rather than build year is the reliable check

NIKKO ELECTRIC — THE ORIGINAL SUPPLIER:
The original starter on these machines was built by Nikko Electric Industry, which supplied the electrical set for the D20 and D21 including the 24 volt alternator. Nikko starter numbers run in the 0-23000 series, so if the number on your original begins 0-23000 it is a Nikko starter. Numbers beginning 0-33000 are alternators and numbers beginning 0-25000 are relays and solenoids, not complete starters

DOES NOT FIT — THE COMMON MISTAKES:
• Komatsu D21A-7 and D21P-7 with the 4D94E engine are 12 VOLT machines with a 2.3 kW starter
• Komatsu D20A-8, D20P-8, D21A-8 and D21P-8 with the 4D94LE-2 engine are also 12 VOLT with a 2.3 kW starter
• The earlier dash 5 machines such as the D21A-5 use the 4D92-2P engine
• Komatsu forklifts fitted with the same 4D95S engine run a 12 VOLT Denso starter, not this one — the engine does not determine the voltage, the machine does
• Machines requiring a 4.5 kW starter, such as the PC60-6, use a larger unit

MATCH THE NUMBER ON YOUR ORIGINAL — CHECK BEFORE ORDERING:
Read the number stamped on your original starter and match it against the cross reference list. Where the number has worn off, the checks that matter are the system voltage, the tooth count, the pinion diameter and the series number on the machine plate
