GEAR REDUCTION REPLACEMENT FOR THE ORIGINAL DIRECT DRIVE:

GEAR REDUCTION UNIT — EXPECT IT TO LOOK DIFFERENT FROM YOUR ORIGINAL:
The Perkins 4.236 and 6.354 left the factory with a CAV CA45 series DIRECT DRIVE starter, a physically larger and heavier motor. This offset gear reduction design supersedes it. The pinion tooth count and gear diameter are unchanged, and the mounting matches, so it fits the original bell housing without modification

SUFFIX AND TOOTH COUNT — CHECK BEFORE ORDERING:
The CAV CA45 family runs in several suffix variants and more than one tooth count. This unit is the 13 TOOTH starter covering the -4 and -Y4 suffixes, CA45D12-4 and CA45F12-Y4. CA45 starters carrying the -2, -51, -72, -Y51 or -Y72 suffixes are different units, several of which use a 10 tooth pinion. Match the full number stamped on your original starter, not just the CA45 prefix

FITMENT NOTES:
• 12 VOLT, offset gear reduction, clockwise rotation, 13-tooth pinion, 45.6mm gear outside diameter
• Three mounting holes, 11.1mm unthreaded, on ear centres of 90.1mm, 90.1mm and 127.5mm
• ROTATABLE NOSE. The drive end housing can be rotated and re-indexed relative to the motor body, so the solenoid and terminal positions can be set to clear the block, exhaust and chassis on your installation. Slacken the through bolts, rotate the nose to the required position, then retighten. This is what allows one starter to serve the many different mounting orientations across the Perkins 4.236 and 6.354 range

• The Perkins 4.236 and 6.354 are fitted to a very wide range of industrial, generator, marine and agricultural equipment. Identify by the engine model and the number on the original starter rather than by machine model
• SOME CAV APPLICATIONS REQUIRE AN OIL SEALED STARTER. Where the starter nose sits in an oil wetted flywheel or bell housing, confirm the sealing arrangement on your original unit before ordering
• Fit new mounting hardware and check the battery cables and earth strap while the starter is out. Undersized or corroded cables are the most common cause of slow cranking after a starter replacement
